Dr. Somdutt Prasad — MS, FRCSEd, FRCOphth, FACS and MFMLM
— is currently a consultant ophthalmologist and retinal specialist at B.B. Eye
Foundation, AMRI and i4vision. Having served as a consultant in both the NHS and the private sector in the UK for over a decade, he has now relocated back to India. His skills encompass an excellent clinical role combined with experience of senior clinical management positions in the past.
Clinical: On the clinical front, Dr. Som Prasad has been an innovator and early adopter of new surgical techniques. This expanded the referral base of the unit with patients being referred in from across the country (UK) for specialized procedures. He has also concentrated on training allied professionals to empower them to take on expanded roles, for example he has trained optometrists to undertake follow up assessments for macular degeneration patients.
Personally, Dr. Prasad is adept at the full range of medical and surgical retinal procedures from diagnosis to treatment. For the last decade in the UK, he was doing about 300 vitrectomy surgeries a year, and treating about a 1000 patients a year with medical retinal conditions including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, venous occlusions and miscellaneous other conditions of the retina.
He has also very good experience with the use of advanced technology IOls (Intra Ocular Lensese) including toric, multifocal and accommodative lenses with over 90% of the patients who have had this procedure being functionally spectacle independent after cataract surgery or clear lens exchange done by him. Again, he has been performing about 1000 cataract surgeries each year for the last 12 years in the UK.
Introducing new techniques to the unit was dependent on expanding the referral base, which he achieved through extensive networking with colleagues across the country and by presenting outcomes in various fora. The relationships he built with colleagues across the country in the early part of his consultant career whilst he developed the service stood him in good stead when he later served on the board of professional organisations. He gained experience in team building and leadership as he worked with different professional groups to enhance the service.
